AUGUST 16 IS NATIONAL BACKFLOW PREVENTION DAY Thank You for Doing Your Part to Ensure Clean Drinking WaterAugust 16 is observed as National Backflow Prevention Day to raise awareness about the importance of preventing backflow which can cause contamination of clean water supplies. It is also the day to celebrate the unsung heroes who keep our drinking water supply free of toxins, waste, chemicals, and other contaminants – and this includes YOU! Backflow prevention devices, and the folks that maintain them, are crucial for protecting drinking water from contamination. Backflow preventers on homes and businesses stop dirty water from flowing backward into the main water supply. These devices act as a barricade, making sure the water flow is always from the public water source to the user’s system and not the other way around. Every year, residents and businesses are required to have their backflow prevention device tested to make sure it is working properly. The prompt, to do the testing, is initiated through a letter received from the City of Winter Garden; however, the mandate comes from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. It is the responsibility of the property owner to ensure that the test is performed by a Florida certified tester, and to make sure that a copy of the test report is sent to the City of Winter Garden. When you have your backflow prevention device tested, you are doing your part to ensure a clean water supply to your property and the community. Backflow prevention is crucial for public health and safety. National Backflow Prevention Day is a good reminder to recognize plumbers, certified testers, and City staff who safeguard our drinking water sources to help ensure clean drinking water for everyone – and to recognize YOU for helping with the process.
