Storm Drains are NOT for DumpingThe City of Winter Garden maintains 157 miles of stormwater pipes, 5,551 storm drains (sometimes called inlets), and 26 retention ponds. This infrastructure is designed to help prevent flooding by diverting rainwater off the streets and other paved surfaces and into a natural body of water. Because these drains flow directly into our lakes, rivers, and ponds, they should not be used for Illicit Discharges. Dumping paint, household waste, auto fluids, cooking oil, litter, yard waste, pesticides, and fertilizers into storm drains can damage pipes, pollute our waterways, and harm wildlife. It’s also illegal. We encourage our residents to keep an eye out for any dumping into our stormwater system. If you witness any illicit discharges, please notify the City of Winter Garden. When reporting, please provide the following information: vehicle description, company name if listed on the vehicle, description of the person, location of the illicit discharge. Take photos if not at risk of altercation with illicit discharger, and any description of material/liquid being discharged into the storm drain. How to Report Illicit Discharges into Storm Drains: *During Business Hours, call 407.656.2256. *On Weekends or After Hours, call 321.436.4559. *Use the Winter Garden Mobile Citizen App and select from drop down menu option: Public Sve-Engineering/Stormwater/Drainage.

Hurricane Insurance TipsBe Prepared Before a Storm With September being the height of the hurricane season, the following are helpful tips for homeowners concerning insurance coverage to make sure you are properly covered and prepared for potential storm damage, provided by the Florida Association of Public Insurance Adjusters (FAPIA).
• Understand the limits of your policy. Not all policies are the same and it’s important to know what parts of your property are covered and what are not. • Ensure you can comfortably pay your deductible. Your deductible is the out-of-pocket cost you must pay before your insurer provides help, so it is vital to know that number and budget for it. • Knowing your home’s vulnerability to storm surge, flooding and wind. Confirm whether your policy covers such damage. • Review the “Duties After Loss” section of your policy. Failure to comply with these could result in non-payment on a legitimate claim. • Check for any and all exclusions. Many insurance companies have added new exclusions to coverage, meaning your roof, patio, fence and more may not be covered. • Make a visual record of your home and possessions. Take photos or record videos to document the condition of your home and belongings before any damage. • Create a detailed list of all your personal property. Having a list will help you document your claim after a loss. • Prepare a disaster supply kit that includes copies of important documents (insurance policy, medical information, deeds and wills). Place the originals in a safe place, but also make digital copies to save in the cloud for easy reference. • Purchase flood insurance. Standard property insurance does not cover flooding and flood insurance has a “grace period” of 30 days before it goes into effect, so you have to purchase it now to be ready for the peak of hurricane season. Should a homeowner suffer property damage from a storm, FAPIA encourages all homeowners to hire only licensed public insurance adjusters – not roofers, contractors or “restoration consultants” – to represent them in navigating their insurance claims. Public insurance adjusters are licensed and trained to carefully inspect the property, document the damage, understand insurance policies, inform policyholders of their responsibilities during the claim and identify the actual costs of repairs. FAPIA member public adjusters uphold the highest possible ethical standards as they navigate the claims process for the policyholder. Click here for more information.

Summer Fertilizer Use RulesEffective through September 30To help protect our rivers, lakes, and springs from nutrient pollution caused by excessive use of nitrogen fertilizers, you may only apply fertilizer with zero nitrogen and zero phosphorus from June 1 to September 30, per Orange County Fertilizer Management Ordinance no. 2022-03. Year-round, remember the following when fertilizing: - All areas of property covered by lawn, turf, and landscape plants are subject to the fertilizer ordinance.

- No fertilizer or grass clippings shall be deposited on streets, driveways, or in storm drains.
- No fertilizer can be applied within 25 feet from waterways.
- Application sites should maintain a 10-foot low maintenance zone -- planted area with no fertilizing, mowing, or maintenance – adjacent to water bodies.
- No fertilizer shall be applied when the National Weather Service issues any advisory for severe thunderstorm, flood, tropical storm, or hurricane.
Violations of this ordinance are subject to Orange County Chapter 11 code violation penalties, including monetary. For more detailed information, visit www.ocfl.net/FertilizeResponsibly.
