Winter Garden Heritage Museum ExhibitSeminole Attire: History and Culture through Design
During the 19th century, the indigenous people we know as Seminoles established a presence in our region. From a Creek word meaning outcast, the name Seminoles came to signify the native Americans expelled from Georgia and Alabama and driven into Florida. Three Seminole wars in the 19th century forced them further south, into the Everglades. The style of clothing displayed in the exhibit originated in the 1920s and continues to develop today with its trademark, intricate patchwork designs.
