Painting & Drawing

WG/PD102 INTRODUCTION TO DRAWING & PAINTING

Open to beginning students as an introduction to the fundamentals of art while sampling various drawing and painting techniques using different media, including watercolors, acrylics and oils. Tuition includes most materials and supplies.

Drawing I covers basic principles of drawing and composition. Students will learn techniques of measuring angles and proportions to create accurate line drawings, techniques of shading to create light and volume, and principles of composition to create dynamic, engaging images.

Introductory to intermediate students will study interpretive landscape painting from photos. Learn "through the eyes of Vincent van Gogh." Add texture, color and perspective to your work. Be bold with color and composition. Demonstrations will be done in oils but all media welcome.

This inspiring class offers a fundamental exploration into the beauty of abstract painting. Instruction concentrates on composition, techniques, form, texture and color. Students will develop their own artistic vision, while referencing the works of contemporary painters. This class is ideal for the beginner to the more experienced painter. Just be ready to paint outside the lines.

Through instruction and assignments, learn essential photography concepts such as exposure, composition and lighting. Understanding camera settings and how to adjust aperture and shutter speeds will allow students to gain creative control of their photography.

Landscape, portrait and documentary photography themes are examined through lectures, slide presentations, assignments, critiques and field trips. A special session and field trip on night photography is featured. Designed for the visual and photographic growth of intermediate-level students working in film or digital, color or black-and-white. Prerequisite: Photography II or similar experience.

Submitting a portfolio? This class provides college-bound art students an opportunity to discuss their artwork and fine-tune their portfolios to ensure a high-quality presentation. Work with a master art educator to discover what colleges are looking for and how to best represent your artistic voice.


 

About Our Instructors...

BEATRICE ATHANAS: A realistic painter of European landscapes, she was born in Germany and has traveled widely. Her work shows passion in the use of vibrant colors, brush-stroke techniques and the light that reflects her mood toward the subject. Member of Oil Painters of America.

PATRICIA BYRON: A professional artist who has lived many years abroad, she attributes her passion for travel, diverse cultures and nature as her inspiration for the arts. She has been an art instructor at Crealdé for more than six years, and has exhibited in numerous galleries and in private collections.

PAULA DAVIS: Has been associated with Crealdé since 1980, teaching photography and ceramics for the Young Artist Program. In addition, she is an instructor for the popular Summer ArtCamp and a presenter for the Studio Field Trip Program.

PRAYONG DEEYING: Received his BFA at Fine Art University, Thailand and his Master's Degree in Painting from Northwestern State University, Louisiana. He taught art for 13 years and was employed for 20 years at Walt Disney World as a Senior Artist Prep. 

BELINDA GLENNON: Joined the Crealdé faculty in 2002 where she teaches hand building and wheel throwing for adults and youth and is coordinator of the Young Artist Program. She holds a bachelor's and master's degree from the University of Central Florida.

CAT HEMPEL: A Winter Garden resident with a bachelor's degree in drawing and printmaking from UCF and an Associate Member of the Oil Painters of America.

MARK LEPOW: Received his photographic education at Daytona State College and is active in photographing community events throughout Winter Garden including 3k-5k runs, cycling, and triathlons.

TRISH O'DONNELL: A Winter Garden resident with a BA in Studio Art and Art Education, Trish currently teaches art at Montverde Academy. She loves drawing, painting and photography, and sharing in the creative experience with children of all ages.

PETER SCHREYER: Executive Director at Crealdé; international exhibition record, numerous awards and public art commissions; including four documentary projects in the Winter Garden and Lake Apopka area in the past 15 years. Named Arts Educator of the Year in 2009 by United Arts.

MICHAEL VAN GELDER: An Orlando area commercial photographer who specializes in documenting musical and entertainment events. His work has appeared in such publications as Music Entertainment Magazine, All Access Music Magazine and Guitar Magazine.

BARBARA YOUNG: Barbara Young's passion for nature and art brought her to Crealdé in 2003, where she participated in the Painting & Drawing Fellowship program before becoming an instructor for both youth and adults in 2009.
With parental permission, self-motivated young adults (ages 14 to 17) are welcome to enroll in adult Painting, Drawing and Ceramics classes.
