UCF MEDICAL SCHOOL On March 23, 2006 the state Board of Governors approved the creation of the College of Medicine at the University of Central Florida. The Healthcare Campus will be located in south Orlando just east of the Orlando International Airport. Classes may start in fall 2008, upon completion of the biomedical sciences building, phase one of the 50-acre site. The campus will be bordered by shops and restaurants to the north and a scenic wetland on the south. A boulevard with wide sidewalks and fountains will connect condos and apartments on the east, with the research park on the west. The campus will include the College of Medicine, the Burnett College of Biomedical Sciences and a medical library. The degree program will eventually produce about 120 medical graduates each year, and will leverage UCF’s strengths in biomedical science, modeling and simulation, and optics and photonics. Materials science, psychology, chemistry, film and digital media, and nursing programs will support the college. A joint cooperative agreement was signed in March 2006 by UCF and Scripps Research Institute to foster collaborative work on therapies for cardiovascular disease, cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, and infectious diseases. The UCF College of Medicine could generate:
